Dear recipient

It was wonderful to experience a beautiful April start to term - the mood was typically buoyant. This has not waned through the early part of May and there has been much to ‘stir the soul’ with fantastic enthusiasm in all areas of endeavour.

Summer is, of course, a term for a strong commitment to studies and tutors are working hard with pupils to prepare for external and internal examinations. Best wishes to all of our pupils at this critical time of the year.

In looking forward, parents will receive information regarding changes to our Reporting and Parents' Meeting structure in the near future. This follows the successful implementation of our altered timetable this year and points to our strong commitment to ensuring pupils are well supported in their learning, both in terms of class based programmes and communication about their progress.

There have been many special events in the early part of the term. The Confirmation Service at Wells Cathedral was a community celebration for those affirming their Christian faith. It was also pleasing to note that the Choir travelled to Berlin for a Choral festival which involved many University and adult choirs. The Royal Wedding was celebrated in Houses and that day also saw us play men’s and women’s teams from the MCC. For photos of both MCC matches please click here.

I am pleased to announce that Mr Chris Seal from the Licensed Victuallers’ School has been appointed as Deputy Head (Housing). Mr Seal is currently Deputy Head (Pastoral) and has significant experience of Houseparenting and management of boarding. Mr Seal teaches Physical Education. I very much look forward to welcoming him and his family to Millfield in September.

Recently I wrote to all parents promoting the 2011 Annual Fund and its focus on several projects in the School. I would very much like to thank those who have generously contributed to the Fund at this stage and encourage as many others as possible to consider support at whatever level feels comfortable. I do believe that this additional support from within our community will continue to have a positive effect on what we can offer current and future pupils. Please contact the Development Office if you would like more details.

The School held a very successful Open Day on Saturday with many families here to look around and get a better understanding of what we offer. I look forward to seeing you all through the term and also at Parents’ Day on Saturday 2nd July. Invitations for this day will be with you shortly.

Berlin triumph for Millfield Choir

Berlin triumph for Millfield Choir

The Millfield Camerata Choir (pictured above) travelled to Berlin over the first weekend of the term and performed at the Berlin Choral Festival. Venues included the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, St Matthias’ Church and Kaiser-Wilhelm Gedaechtnis Kirche. The Choir were awarded the prize for the best programme of the Festival which is an outstanding achievement considering Millfield were the only student choir competing against very experienced adult and University choirs from around the world. Thanks to Mr Jensen, Elena Fraser and Semra Kurutac for organising the trip. Read more

The Music Department are delighted to be welcoming virtuoso violinist So Ock Kim for a series of pupil workshops and a concert in the Johnson Hall on the 23rd June. Tickets for the concert are selling fast and are available here.

Sports Update

Sports Update

It is not often that we get to herald World Champions, so it is exciting to begin by acknowledging the efforts of our golfers in retaining the World Schools Golf Challenge won two years ago and retained this Easter in South Africa. The party of Katherine Carragher, Jamie Clare, Joe Clare, Digby Edgley, Nic Elliott, Patrick Fereday, JJ Fletcher, Moritz Hausweiler, Sophie Keech, Joe Lovery, Anthony McGeorge, Freddie Sexton, Adarsh Shah, Matthew Sheehan, Zhanna Tarasko and Adan Yates won the Boys Team, Mixed Team, Individual Boy (Gross), Individual Girls (Gross) and Individual Girl (Nett) titles, with various second places to boot!  Many congratulations to all and coaches Karen Nicholls and Stuart Wells.

The golfers were preceded in South Africa by our senior rugby players, whose 11-day tour took in the magnificent St John’s Festival and a coaching session in Soweto.  Their junior counterparts were similarly involved in tournaments in Portugal (U15) and Italy (U16). Thanks must go to the staff and parents who make these tours possible, providing such wonderful sporting and learning opportunities, and we look forward to further news when our hockey players, footballers and cricketers visit South Africa and Sri Lanka, respectively, later in the year.

Closer to home our pupils enjoyed further international recognition, with Harry Turner selected for England Basketball, Tom Hurley winning 4 caps for England Schools Football, Jess Orrett and Harry Gibson playing hockey for England, Xavier Vrigneau representing Britain in Modern Pentathlon, Fiona Murphy selected to play squash for Wales senior ladies team, and Marwan El Shorbagy winning his first PSA Squash Title to move in to the World’s Top 100.

Last Thursday, Year 9 pupils also took part in a Physics Challenge in the Barracuda. Pupils were paired up and given a box of equipment to make a balloon powered car. The idea of the Challenge was to promote the engineering side of Physics and to make the subject more accessible and fun for the pupils.  The winner was Nick Thorp, whose car travelled a remarkable distance of 6.65 metres. Libby Letchford and her teammate Georgie Kloos finished second with a distance of 4.4 metres.
